In those days Visakhapatnam was just a village of fishing people. It grew up as town in British era. Now Visakhapatnam population is more than 10 lakhs and even known to other countries of the world. Visakhapatnam can definitely develop as major IT hub.

Andhra Pradesh - Visakhapatnam

Vizag to become IT hub

Santosh Patnaik

The city's landscape, virgin beaches, tourist locales at Araku valley, almost crime-free status and availability of cheap land and labour will be tempting for the investors.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The decision of Satyam, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) to launch their operations in and around Visakhapatnam is bound to put the city in the world IT map soon.

Satyam Computers has already launched work on developing an IT park at the TB Hospital site and a training centre on 50 acres near Rushikonda will certainly send the word across the globe that Vizag is an IT hub in-the-making.

As Hyderabad has reached the saturation point, IT investors will also find Vizag as an alternative destination. Moreover, the city's landscape, virgin beaches, tourist locales at Araku valley, almost crime-free status and availability of cheap land and labour will be very tempting for the investors.

There are 13 engineering colleges located in and around the city producing prospective IT professionals to meet the requirement of IT firms.

``Vizag has good potential to become a hub for business process outsourcing. It will also develop into a second tier IT destination with world-class facilities coming up soon,'' the Satyam Computers Services Limited Managing Director, B. Rama Raju, said after the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, laid stone for Satyam training centre near Rushikonda.

IT investors consider Satyam's initiative as a major development. Satyam group is expected to invest Rs. 150 crores with a direct employment for 5,000 through its training-cum-research centre.

Along with Satyam, 22 acres is also allotted at the TB Hospital site to Wipro and TCS in the heart of the city where they will set up their own parks.

Even there is good news for small and medium enterprises who will get ready-to-start space at twin IT towers proposed on the lines of Cyber Towers in Hyderabad. The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation is now busy in finalising the tenders to start work with private partnership.

While one tower will be earmarked exclusively for small and medium enterprises, the other one will be meant for big players. The ground-levelling work at the site located near All India Radio is already completed.

About 2,000 acres has already been identified near Rushikonda for allotment to IT investors. Once the process is completed, exports from this region are also expected to witness a quantum jump.

The State Export Processing Zone also wants to tap the IT potential by constructing an exclusive block for software units.

The State, which had an export turnover of Rs.5,000 crores in 2003-04 and Rs.8.500 crores in 2004-05, is expected to increase it to Rs. 12,000 crores.
