Phoenix of Dubai plans to list India entity next fiscal.
Plans to constuct Radisson Plaza star Hotel at Vizag.

Dubai’s Phoenix Group, which operates luxury resorts and spas in the South, is consolidating its Indian businesses, as its prepares to raise funds for expansion. On the cards is a possible listing of the consolidated entity on Indian bourses in the next financial year.

The group’s focus is on developing a chain of luxury business hotels over the next 3-5 years. It will also begin construction of two premium residential projects in Goa this year.

“The current requirement of funds is estimated at Rs 1,500 crore. The group will raise 70% through borrowings and the rest will come from either an IPO or private equity placement, depending on market conditions. The consolidation process will be completed this fiscal,” said Priti Chand, director (PR & communications).

The Phoenix Group has interests in the hospitality, real estate and floriculture businesses in Asia, Africa and Europe. In India, it is also considering an entry into education services but no plan has been firmed up yet, Ms Chand said.

The first of its business hotels, containing 160 rooms, will be operational in Bangalore within a year under the Radisson Plaza brand. Phoenix has also identified land in Ahmedabad, Kochi, Chennai, Nagpur and Visakhapatnam for more such hotels.

“We are in advanced negotiations with Carlson Hotels Worldwide as well as with other global hospitality groups for franchises. We will manage the properties ourselves,” he said. Phoenix operates the Radisson Plaza Resort & Spa in Kerala, Radisson White Sands Resort and the Country Inns & Suites in Goa, all under a franchise from Carlson Hotels Worldwide.

The group estimates the value of its investments in India at about Rs 1,500 crore and employs some 950 staff in India.

It’s people’s victory, says MLC

MLC M.V.S. Sarma has described the State Government’s decision withdrawing its move to shift the proposed Central University from Visakhapatnam to Kadapa as a ‘victory of the people of north Andhra’.

He welcomed the orders issued by the State Government on Wednesday for the acquisition of 700 acres of land in Visakhapatnam for setting up of the proposed Central University. Mr. Sarma said that the State Government had reversed its decision bowing to pressure from the public, students, employees’ unions and political parties.

He commended the role played by People for India, students union, intellectuals and others that forced the Government to reverse its decision.
