| if vizag gets its due share of required trains, passenger amenities it will just cross VJA, Sec'bad in passenger revenues. Presently vizag people are not at all depending on railways to reach hyd, but are travelling by more than 35 volvo buses and 6 aeroplanes operated each day(off course families, poor, old and retired are dependent on godavari and visakha exp). no volvo bus to hyd from vizag touches vja except 2 garuda volvos. in my opinion rajahmundry-suryapet road should immediately be converted into 4 lane for speedy travel of public by buses. _________________ STATESMAN |

| VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada division of the South Central Railway (SCR) will soon emerge as a major corridor of important ports in the State. The division, which is already involved in transportation of goods from Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports, will commence operations at Machilipatnam port too by shipping the boulders required for the construction of new deepwater port at Machilipatnam from Kondapalli.
The officials of the division are also toying with the idea of getting a special track laid between Anakapalle and the new Gangavaram port coming up near Visakhapatnam. Once it materialises, the Vijayawada division will emerge as one of the highest revenue earning divisions in the Indian Railways, besides achieving the rare record of connecting four ports.
“Laying a railway track from Gangavaram to Anakapalle will be cheaper than doing so from Visakhapatnam. The track will be a win-win for the Vijayawada division and the Gangavaram Port Limited (GPL), and, hence, we plan to send a proposal to this effect to GPL,” Divisional Railway Manager S.K. Sharma told The Hindu. Incidentally, while Anakapalle comes under the South Central Railway, Visakhapatnam station falls under the East Coast Railway.
Mr. Sharma pointed out that there would be a need to construct some road over bridges to lay a track between Gangavaram and Visakhapatnam. Such problems would not arise if the track was to be laid between Gangavaram and Anakapalle. In terms of distance, there would not be much difference. “It is for the Gangavaram Port Limited to take a final decision,” he said.
Major role
The Vijayawada railway division is already carting rice, granite, cement and other commodities to Kakinada and Krishnapatnam ports and is going to play a major role in the construction of Machilipatnam port by carting building material. |
