Vijawada to become ‘Greater City’

After Greater Hyderabad and Greater Visakhapatnam, it is the turn of Vijayawada to expand its limits to become another ‘Greater city’ in the State.

In a recent meeting with Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy gave his nod for upgrading the city into Greater Vijayawada by merging the 14 surrounding villages into VMC on the lines of other two metros. Besides Mayor Mallika Begum, Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar and city MLA V Radhakrishna were present in the meeting.

The Greater Vijayawada is likely to be materialised before panchayat elections and the villages that be merged include Kanuru, Yanamalakuduru, Poranki, Nidamanuru, Enikepadu, Prasadampadu, Ramavarappadu, Patapadu, Nainavaram, Ambapuram, Jakkampudi, Gollapudi and parts of Vidyadharapuram. However, the State Government has to issue a notification in this regard.

The Patamata, Gunadala, Bhavanipuram, Payakapuram, Kundavari Kandriga panchayats were already merged in the municipal limits in 1989.

Speaking on this,’ Natarajan Gulzar said that the surrounding villages would witness development including underground drainage system, supply of protected drinking water and roads.

The officials are planning to speed up the process as the city has been getting necessary funds under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission under various heads.

An amount of Rs 950 crore has been sanctioned to launch several development works in the city under JNNURM schemes. In addition to this, the city would get Rs 120 crore towards solid waste management and Rs 140 crore for relaying of roads where the underground drainage was taken up.

At present, the length of the city stands at 56 sq km and it would be increased to 125 sq km once the Greater Vijayawada is formed. Even the total population would go up by two lakh from the present 9.5 lakh.

Areas of Cities in AP:

Hyderabad = Before Greater (280 SqKms), After Greater (650 SqKms).

Vizag = Before Greater (112 SqKms), After Greater (550 SqKms).

Vijayawada = Before Greater(56 SqKms), After Greater (125 SqKms).
