SC verdict on OBC reservation

In a landmark verdict, SC not only reaffirmed its views on the removal of creamy layer from OBC reservation but also clarified what the creamy layer is.

Its definition of creamy layer of anybody who earns more than Rs 20,000/month is clearly what is required to prevent the misuse of the reservation. Elimination of elected political leaders from the OBC reservation is another remarkable part of this verdict. Similarly they clarified that once the OBC candidate completes graduation from university, he already took the step towards his/her advancement and therefore doesn't need any more help towards PG or PHD. Please list any other salient features.

In any case do you agree with this verdict? What are the pros and cons of this verdict?

During NDTV debate on this Chandrabhan prasad a dalit intellectual made the pertinent point - OBCs with their present political and economical strength will be a threat to the whole country if an elite intellectual class does not come from them. I immediately made the connection to the present T seperatism led by political and economically strong communities such as T region Reddy and Velama but with no elite and intellectual class coming from them.

Not to mention the *** NRI's who think the money they make from clerical coding jobs entitles them to aspire to re-draw the political map of a region in the counrty.

Contrast this with initial Brahmin, Kamma, reddy,Kapu, Raju communities from Kostha region who in spite of their casteist prejudices defenitely had an intellectual grounding and knew where to draw the line.

My conclusion is the SC should not have made the distinction of creamy layer let those who can benefit the maximum from reservation- the creamy layer OBC benefit from it. Let them be part of the intellectual elite of this country as well so they can defend the country and its values.

First let me clarify what you have said. When you say intellectual class, I'm assuming set of people with strong morals who can support equality, fairness etc. I need to make this distinction as there are too many pseudo intellectuals who are still drowned in nepotism.

Having said that I see strong reason why creamy layer has to be removed from the reservation. I don't know about other issues, but on the issue of caste, if the benefits coming by birth last forever, they will never be willing to give up. I rather be more defensive and create conditions that facilitate this fairness rather than hope for the best.

The best example I've is women's rights. Even in intellectual class, that come from traditional family back ground, they have certain assumptions made about women. Those assumptions may be true about their family, but they could not see it from society at large. Ultimately it is women from this class that fought for their rights.
