All set for export of garments

The first export consignment of readymade garments manufactured at the Apparel Export Park will leave Port of Vizag on Wednesday.

The Sai Theertha Apparels and Exports of the Apparel Park was sending a container fully loaded with 100 per cent cotton readymade garments produced by it to Italy, said its managing director A. Sailaja Venugopal and executive director A. Venugopal Naidu at a press conference here on Tuesday. The company received orders worth around Rs.75 lakhs from Italy and the first consignment worth Rs.19 lakhs was being sent to Naples by m.v. C.S. Signe.

The next consignment worth the rest of the order would be sent to Genevo (Italy) on February 15. The garments were manufactured for the clients in Italy. The couple said that the unit, registered with the Apparel Export Promotion Council of India, was established six months ago and was the first in the city to receive a direct export order.

Till now exports were only being done from places like Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai and now Vizag stands beside them, he added.

The absence of any support industry here forced the unit to acquire everything, even the buttons and thread from outside. The 100 per cent cotton cloth was brought from Pakistan and Coimbatore. The price charged by the unit for a pair of bermudas and jeans was 6.5 euros and 6.3 euros respectively (Rs.360 and Rs.350).

Unit cost

The unit, established at a cost of Rs.1.20 crores, had 250 sewing machines and workwomen strength of 400. Soon, the number of machines and workforce would be increased to 400 and 600.

In two to three years, it plans to install 4,000 machines and engage 6,000 workers. It was planning to have its own washing machine. It also spent nearly Rs.75 lakhs on training the women in sewing on machines. Mr. Venugopal Naidu said the US market had not been encouraging for the last many months due to the drop in dollar value while the European market was encouraging.

Sai Theertha would introduce garments with its own brand name Jasham’s in Southern States in three months, said Ms. Sailaja. Apart from the export market and selling garments with its own brand name, the unit was manufacturing garments for noted companies at their specifications.
