Politicians from Kosta andhra feel the heat now. People like lagadapati and others know that as and when T is seperated, Vizag will be declared as the capital (it is quite evedent from the words of PM recently, when he said, Vizag will be like other capital cities viz. Chennai and Mumbai). Just let the dirt and the terrorist city go off, we will see a new horizon for Vizag.

Protest mars VUDA auction

Staff Reporter

Some 100 activists of TDP, CPI(M) and BJP arrested

Acting tough: Police restraining a CPI(M) activist from staging a protest at the venue of the bulk land auction by VUDA in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. —

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority’s first bid during current fiscal to mobilise funds by selling lands to bridge the budgetary deficit of the State received a setback on Thursday with no response to the much-hyped bulk auction of land in prime areas.

The attempt to auction was marred by protests by the Opposition and the police bundled protesters on noticing them, irrespective of their number, into waiting jeeps and mini-lorries. At one point of time, TDP corporator Kona Tata Rao was seen pleading with the police that he did not come for staging a protest. However, his pleadings fell on deaf ears as he was loaded into a jeep. Over 100 activists of the TDP, the CPI(M) and the BJP were arrested in separate batches.

Agonising wait

Incidentally, VUDA officials were seen waiting doing nothing for the bidders to turn up at the VUDA Children’s Theatre from 10 a.m. However, only one bidder turned up with an earnest money deposit of Rs.1 crore. When he was approached, he told the officials bluntly that he had come only to “assess the situation.”

VUDA officials, who made arrangements for lunch with a female anchor to coordinate the programme, finally announced at 3 p.m. that they were postponing the auction and the date would be notified later.

Upset price

The upset price for four plots in Madhurawada was fixed at Rs.3.5 crores while it was Rs.4 crores an acre for three plots in Rushikonda. VUDA had expected to mop up over Rs.300 crores from the auctions to meet the target set by the State to contribute Rs.1,400 crores as its share from sale of lands during 2008-09.

When contacted, VUDA secretary A. Jagadeesh told The Hindu that they would study the reason why there was no response to buy well developed plots in prime locations. Asked whether 10 per cent of the plotted area sold by the VUDA had to be given to weaker sections as per the Master Plan, he said the yardstick would be applicable only for housing layouts.
