VIJAYAWADA: P. Prabodh Kumar, managing director of Hyderabad-based Omega Airlines, held discussions with officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Gannavaram airport here on Monday as part of the company’s plans to launch operations with small aircrafts.

Ready to fly

Mr. Kumar later told The Hindu that their airlines had recently got permission from the Director General of Civil Aviation for operating non-scheduled transport services in passenger, cargo and charter categories.

To begin with, Omega would bring in 19-seater Beachcraft flights to realise its immediate plans of launching operations.

Mr. Prabodh Kumar was euphoric about the increasing air traffic from Vijayawada to various other destinations in the country and described Gannavaram airport as a potential place for starting various new routes.

“I’ve visited many airports in the last few months. After analysing various factors, I feel this airport will have a lot of economic viability and higher growth rate in the coming years,” he said.

Observing that people had begun to prefer air travel to save time, Mr. Kumar said destinations like Tirupati, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar and Goa would also have a lot of patronage.

He referred to his experience of flying from Hyderabad to Vijayawada on Monday as an eye-opener of how the traffic had increased manifold.

Growing patronage

When he bought ticket on Sunday, he was the lone passenger. But when the flight took off, it was full to its capacity, which was an indication of the growing patronage of industrialists, software professionals, NRIs and others of air travel, he said.

Mr. Prabodh Kumar said Omega would be involved in improving facilities at Gannavaram airport, as it was aiming at operating most of its flights from here.

Negotiations

Already, Omega had started negotiating for using the parking facilities at the airport. He said air travel as a whole in the country had got tremendous potential and Gannavaram airport would enjoy a better standing.

Mr. Kumar inquired about the transport facilities available for passengers between the airport terminal and the city.

The airport officials told him that the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) should organise some services that were already plying from Vijayawada to Gannavaram town to pick up passengers from the airport terminal. The timings could be scheduled to coincide with the arrival and departure of flights, the AAI officials felt.

It is good to hear that omega air is willing to operate most of its services from gannavaram airport...But small 19 seater aircraft and ATR aircraft , i dont think can give the required fillip to the aviation sector in vijayawada...

The airport expansion works should be taken up as immediatly as possible to enable landing of boeing and airbus aircraft
