| under no circumstances GVTA should award BRTS services to APSRTC they should develop such a culture nothing less than BEST buses in Mumbai with max 10 standies, i dream vizag should ban 3 wheler autos and 7 seater buses to replace with metered taxies soon. _________________ STATESMAN |

| | Good thought, I guess the purpose of setting up GVTA is that. But I'm sceptical about banning autos. That will be politicised again. And how can we do that when lakhs of families are being fed on that mode of transport? |

| Greater Vizag Transport Authority formed.
The Central Government has approved the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation's proposal for taking up work on the Bus Rapid Transport System at a cost of Rs. 452.93 crores. The Union Ministry of Urban Development at a meeting held in Delhi on Friday accorded clearance to the project. Calling for tenders for infrastructure will begin under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. GVMC has to mobilise Rs. 135 crores towards its share - of which 50 per cent will be taken as loan from financial institutions. Mayor Pulusu Janardhan Rao and Municipal Commissioner Mukesh Kumar Meena told reporters on Saturday after their return from Delhi that the GVMC would launch work in three months.
BRTS tracks would be laid in eight routes.Greater Visakha Transport Authority (GVTA) - a special purpose vehicle -- is proposed for manning the BRTS. The project will be completed in three years.In the first phase, Simhachalam and Pendurthi transit corridors would be taken up respectively at a cost of Rs.261.90 crores and Rs.191.03 crores.
The Simhachalam corridor would include digging of a tunnel through Simhachalam hills at a cost of Rs. 93.65 crores. Mr. Meena said land acquisition process wherever required would start soon. |
