| KG-OSN-97/4: Reliance in no mood to relinquish block; ready to pay penalty
Dec. 14: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has decided not to relinquish its Krishna-Godavari basin block KG-OSN-97/4. "The company is planning to furnish cash penalties imposed by the government for its unfulfilled work programme in the KG block," Reliance sources close to the project told our website on Thursday. The Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) -- which has taken a tough line against non-performing NELP operators -- had recently asked the company to relinquish the entire 4,000 sq km offshore block. The private upstream company is instead mulling to pay a cash penalty of $2.65 million for the unfinished 2D and 3D seismic survey and one un-drilled exploratory well under Phase-I. The fine was imposed earlier this year by the ministry after Reliance failed to fulfill its MWP commitments in the block, even after being granted two successive extensions of 18 months (12 months earlier + 6 months additional), sources added. Interestingly, the company is committed to drill a total of eleven exploratory wells in KG-OSN-97/4, out of which only one well has been drilled till date. KG-OSN-97/4 is a NELP-I block and Reliance has a 100% stake in the offshore acreage. By Sadiq Shaban _________________ STATESMAN |
