TCS is going to go after many non-engineering colleges in our state and recruit Bsc graduates with Maths or Physics background. This is after US govt recognized our 3 year degree course as valid professional course. TCS is planning to recruit 30,000 graduates.

One caution here. I don’t believe that TCS ran out of Engineering graduates in the state or the country. They are simply taking advantage of modified US visa regulations towards the 3 year degree professionals. Bottom line is they want to cut down their costs from spiraling employee salaries of engineering graduates. They can recruit Bsc graduates with lot less salary. Let us hope the competition with other companies bring the salaries of the new recruits also at par with their work.

Heard Wipro too is recruting BSc graduates. Having had a touch of teaching graduates few years ago as well as to Eng/PG students later, i see that there is a wide gap between the two sets. I worked for few MNC's and have the experience of entry level software professionals on the other side too. Considering this, i really doubt how well BSc students will fit in the MNC corporate culture. What i wish to highlight here is that BSc graduates require more regorous training than a normal Eng/PG fresher when it comes to working / handling large-scale projects.

webgeek,

In reality, most of the offshore work is still bottom fed. Therefore, with right training, I think Bsc graduates will be able to do the job as well as engg graduates. I agree with you there would be a big difference in talent between Engg vs Bsc. But this is given - the fact that most of them go to BSc (no offence) only as second choice after Engg. But with hard work they can overcome it. Beyond technical skills, they need to work on their softskills, the most critical skill required to grow.

I heard from some TCS employees that recently TCS has mailed 5000 employment letters in a single day and planning to recruit another 30,000+ in 2007. If only we could repilcate this success in manufacturing, we will be in great shape by 2015.
