A total of 100 cm rain in avanigedda compared to 37 cm rain in 1977 historical cyclone. Though it spared human life this time, the property loss is astronomical. In Krishna dist alone, the farm loss is estimated to be Rs 1000 crore, and in Guntru and Praksam another Rs 442 crores. There is a lot of rain stretching all the way to Karimnagar. The loss is significant as it is very close to the harvesting season. After it has been under water for so many days. I don’t know whether any yield can be salvaged. Thousands of houses are still submerged under water. The basic issue is the drainage system that was installed years ago, and has never been upgraded. Earlier they used to serve the function of levy system. But poor management and negligence made them non-functional. On top of this another low pressure front is moving in. Hope it doesn’t hit the same region.

People living in politics and peole supporting goonda politicians, people still send waste fellows to assembly continuously without verifying their credentials are responsible for these clalamities. if any CM wants to develop the drainage system in these districts well before any of such havoc happens, MLAs and ministers line up for contracts, opposition criticises the requirement of such drainage system and attach all motives to any ruling party which dares to take up such works before hand as a prevention. Let people realise at least now beg the government and cooperate with the government for taking up RCC drains with good quality barring politicians in taking up such works to avoid recurrence of such havocs in future.

State looks to Japan for dam money

After securing a loan of Rs 2,250 crore from the World Bank to modernise the Nagarjunasagar project, the State government is looking to the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation for a loan of Rs 3,560 crore to modernise the delta systems in coastal Andhra.

According to department sources, the State government has submitted proposals to JBIC to help assist the modernisation of Godavari, Krishna and Pennar deltas, besides the high-level canal system of Tungabhadra project. According to the project proposal, the Godavari delta system which includes structures, canals and distributory system is in precarious condition. The project is proposed to restore the system at a cost of Rs 1,627 crore to supply water to 10.13 lakh acres of land.

The Krishna delta system, one of the oldest systems constructed in 1852, has outlived its age. The government plans to improve the drainage system, canals and canal structures at a cost of Rs 932.55 crore to supply water to 13 lakh acres. The Pennar delta system, consisting of Sangam and Nellore projects with a canal system to irrigate 1.75 lakh acres, was formed during the British regime. After the Somasila reservoir was built and infrastructure improved, its irrigated area expanded to 2.47 lakh acres.
