| There is a proposal to eliminate age limit for Engg. I whole heartedly agree with removal of upper age limit. I hope they extend this with other faculties, including civil services. But that is a different subject. Coming back to removal of minimum age limit, I have some reservations. I agree that the current age limit of 17 is high and be brought down but there has to be a limit. Already there is lot of pressure on kids to memorize and be examination oriented, and I tend to think this will aggravate the situation further.
All the stats show that the concept of student wizards or gifted kids has to be reviewed. The basic issue is that kids need all round growth. Just because they have a talent in one subject, you cannot force them on acceleration path on all subjects. They tend to be burnt out by the time they reach adulthood, and have all kind of complications in later part of life. Media only focuses on the first part and never shows what happened to them in the long run. The case of Bobby Fischer, the chess genius from United States, is a perfect example. There are parents like that of Bobby Fischer, who will put enormous pressure on kids for short term glory. I hope the State govt is not carried away. |
