Vizag has the tallest Vinayaka IDOL in Andhra Pradesh.

Vizag beats Hyderabad this year. Khairatabad IDOL is 35 feet and Marripalem IDOL is 36 feet.

VIZAG: The idol of Lord Vinayaka in 104 Area is growing taller with each passing year! Last year it was 35 feet and this year it stands at 36 feet.

The idol is not only towering above all other idols in the City of Destiny but is also competing with the ones in the twin cities. This year Hyderabad's tallest idol is said to be 35 feet.

The idol, being installed by the Vizag Defence Academy, was being given finishing touches by the main sculptor S.N. Raghu and his team on Saturday. The imposing idol is sure to draw awe from thousands of devotees who are expected to visit the venue during the festival.

Along with seven other sculptors, Raghu has been working for the past 45 days to build the magnificent idol.

"In the beginning, we worked for some eight hours a day. After a couple of weeks, it stretched to 12 hours a day, and now, during the past few days, we have put some 15 hours each day to complete the huge idol," he says.

"Unlike the sculptors of Hyderabad, we have not used iron, plaster of Paris and oil-based colours. We have only used Ganga clay specially brought from Kolkata and water-based colours. They give a natural look to the idol and are eco-friendly," says Raghu, who is involved in making idols for the last 45 years. Apart from the main idol, a 10-foot idol of Lord Siva with His consort Parvathi seated on a Nandi and Lion and son Kumara Swamy standing beside them have also been done beautifully. The decorative ornaments like those that adorn His forehead and the waist dazzle in floodlights. A bigger idol will be installed next year, according to V. Ganesh Kumar, Director of Vizag Defence Academy.
