Charvaka\lokayata movement was popular before 600 AD. Kings of Gupta and other dynasties encouraged hindu fundamentalism well. Muslim kings encouraged muslim fundamentalism well. So, charvaka\lokayata movement became weak.

Now there are rationalist, humanist, radical humanist and communist movements that advocate materialism. These movements are strong in some countries. Rationalism will raise it's power in India also. Famous rationalists like N. Innaiah are trying hard to raise rationalist power.
