The recent humiliation of Narayana Murthy, the chief architect of IT revolution at Bangalore by Deve Gowda , a savvy landlord cum politician is very unfortunate. Personally Narayan Murthy is very soft spoken guy and won’t do anything rash. But the new President and CEO Nandan Nilakani is a dynamite. Deve Gowda is calling bluff. I followed this guy when I was at IISc and even spent sometime in Maddur and Mandya districts, his stronghold. What Deve Gowda didn’t realize is that IT industry, unlike manufacturing can change their base in matter of months if not weeks. And in Nandan Nilakani you got a person who can make it happen.

Therefore I urge YSR govt to invite Infosys with open arms ( other states will be doing same) and shift their base to Hyderabad. In fact Deve Gowda dared Mr Murthy to move Infosys to China. This is a fantastic opportunity. We can even offer Vizag and Vijayawada centers to Infosys. Besides half of Infosys guys are from AP and definitely love to move to Hyderabad.

This is one fine article from Sekhar Gupta of Indian express that dissects what Mr Gowda was thinking. This is true for most of our politicians.

The Ground beneath Gowdas feet

.....

This is no clash of personalities or egos. In a reforming Indian economy, this is our first experience of an inevitable clash, between old politics and new economy. Our traditional old politician was at peace with the old economy, where the businessman depended on him for licences, quotas, permissions and clearances and then, to protect him from the extortionist inspector raj and finally, to keep the taxman and other likely raiders off his back. The new economy businesses need none of that.

.....

The IT ministry came up before our political class thought of even setting up an IT ministry. The political class has never quite accepted this. Given half a chance, it would have tried to ‘‘rectify’’ this, by bringing the regulation and restrictions into the sector so that it could somehow acquire discretionary powers. That it can do no such thing, given the iconic status the new economy has acquired, its capacity to generate wealth – and jobs – and the international recognition it has achieved, must be galling for the practitioner of old politics. This is just the sentiment Gowda is reflecting.....
