30 spinning mills to come up in Guntur
Guntur, Oct. 2: Guntur is in for a radical change in cotton industry as nearly 6,000 spindles are proposed to be acquired soon. The State government decided to establish more than 30 spinning mills shor-tly during the recent meeting of Andhra Pradesh Spinning Mills Association. If the dream project is fulfilled, Guntur should be on par with Ahmadabad, Bhi-vandi and may even beat Coimbatore.
After the ann-ual general meeting held at Guntur recently to elect their office-bearers, the APSMA also conducted a day-long seminar. According to the government officials and prominent cotton industrialists who spoke at the seminar, cotton textile sector is poised to improve its performance in the coming months.
Thanks to the integration of the global textile trade into the GATT regime and also measures taken by the government like removal of the excise duty, the industry is likely to get a boost. The re-elected office-bearers of APSMA, including the Ch-airman, Mr R. K. Agarwal and deputy chairman, Mr G. Punnaiah Chowdary, were of the view that with quota abolition, India would eme-rge the most-favoured destination for the US importers seeking to source fabric and garments.
Apart from the 70 spinning mills in the State with a total spindlage of 18.30 million, the newly set up cotton mills around Guntur including Chilakaluri-pet, Perecherla, Nallapadu and Kondrupadu with a minimum of 6000 spindles, would certainly help cotton growers.
Speaking to this correspondent, the secretary of WWA, Mr Padavala Lakshmana Swamy, demanded stringent implementation of the existing directions of the textile commissioner of Mumbai.
Accordingly, the mills have to produce 40 per cent hank yarn to save the handloom industry.
**********************************************
THE spinning mills in Tamil Nadu account for about 35 per cent of the country's installed capacity and produce about 40 per cent of India's yarn, mainly cotton yarn. Coimbatore district alone accounts for about 13 per cent of the spindlage in the country. Of about 1,500 spinning mills in the organised sector in India, nearly 800 (Read Kamma Naidus of coimbatore/Erode) are in Tamil Nadu; of these, nearly 300 are in Coimbatore.
So this is going to be another boost for Kammas of Andhra Pradesh.
Already they are big investors in Cotton Ginning Mills, Pressing Mills and cold storages.
Just like prawn culture has boosted Rajus economy in and around Bhimavaram. |
