Now that we have seen earthquakes rocking across the globe, the focus is all about preparedness in case of a natural disaster. How prepared are we (Andhra Pradesh) to handle an earthquake? What specialized equipment or man power is required for dealing such a contingency? Do you think the district administration and various departments in your town are prepared to handle? Are people in your part of village/town/city aware whom to contact or how to ask help?

oom,

I've my own reasons why Aluminium plant should or should not come. But the imminent earthquake is not one of them. There are many open pit mines much larger than this one, and there is no evidence of earthquakes. In state of Arizona in USA and in the province of South and West Austraila in Australia, there are mines that can cover entire Vizag city. But being closer to Pacific rim, the neighboring states or distant provinces like California and Queensland are more prone to earthquakes. When compared to the depth and size of the tectonic plates, the amount of rock moved out in this area is insignificant. However, there is some evidence in the case of close pit mines and large reservoirs along the tectonic fault, inducing earthquakes by the collapse of either mine roofs or the sheer water pressure.
Seismic map zone of India.

The potential for earthquakes go up from zone 1 to zone v, with zone v being more susceptible . As you can see most of Andhra Pradesh is relatively safe zone.

That said, earthquakes can occur in the low intensity zones also. The readiness of our state is absolutely dismal. The best example is the pathetic rescue operations when the multi storey building collapsed near daba gardens in Vizag city. It took more than 24 hours to get one heavy earth moving equipment and crane (from Vizag port trust) to move the rubble and rescue the trapped worker. Can't fathom what would be like for
a full blown earthquake. Let us pray the statistics of zone i prevail.
