| After a gap of 15 years, where the first attempt to introduce the quota for women in Parliament failed, a new bill was reintroduced in Rajya sabha. Hope it does better this time.
The main theme of the bill is to reserve, certain constituencies randomly in rotation, for women such that the total number of women parliamentarians in the parliament constitute at least 33%. The lame excuse from the opponents, like SP and JDS, comes from the fact that it includes SC&ST quota also. Who knows what their real reason is? BTW, this bill is only valid for 15 years after which this reservation expires unless renewed by parliament.
Do you think it is good idea to allocate 1 out of 3 parliaments seats to women? Or is this a reverse discrimination as some would argue? Do you think it musters required support? |
