The Peer Committee of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was impressed with the academic performance of Andhra University.

Right direction

“It’s an excellent higher education institution and everything impressed us. There is a tremendous possibility of growth (for AU) and the leadership of Vice-Chancellor is praiseworthy and in the right direction. We have found here most of the qualities required for a university and I wonder why it has not gained the Centre of Excellence status yet,” said Chairperson of the Peer Committee Anand Dev Mukhopadhyay at a press conference he addressed after conclusion of the team’s visit on Saturday.

Innovative

Prof. Mukhopadhyay, a former Vice-Chancellor of Vidya Sagar University (West Bengal), said some of the good qualities of AU were the innovative and job-oriented professional courses introduced by it; the curriculum in accordance with the contemporary needs; the committed and highly qualified teaching and non-teaching staff and the excellent collective management.

He said the Peer Committee was highly impressed with the Internal Quality Assessment Circle (IQAC) of the AU, which was not existing in any other Indian university.

Linkage programmes

The 40 MoUs the AU had entered into with national and international universities and institutions and the 36 linkage programmes it was running displayed its academic development and the research going on in the university was of high quality and it was also a sustained research, Prof. Mukhopadyay said.

Confidential meeting

The report of Peer Committee was confidential and the Executive Committee of the NAAC would discuss the report during a meeting to be held in May and decide the points to be awarded to AU.

Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy expressed the hope that the good work done by all in the university should get the institution a good score.

He was confident that AU would be among the top 10 universities in the country.

Winds up visit

The Peer Committee consisting of Prof. Mukhopadyay, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University Sharma V. Lingdo, Prof. Vandana Chatterjee of SMBT Women’s University in Mumbai, former Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University A.S. Subramaniam and Prof. A. Sridharan of Bangalore University along with Coordinator of NAAC (Bangalore) K. Rama visited every academic department, research centre, the library and other centres from April 16 to 18. The committee held a meeting on Saturday before winding up their inspection.
