Orissa comes calling!!!

VIZAG: Taking advantage of the proximity of Orissa to Vizag, the Orissa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (OTDC) has decided to operate package tours to tourist destinations in the State.

Prominent places in the State are the famous Jagannadh dham in Puri, Bhubaneswar, the temple city, Konark, which has a World Heritage Monument and Chilka, the largest brackish water lake famous for its bird sanctuary and scenic beauty. It also has the famous Irrawady dolphins.

Golden triangle

All the places, popularly known as Golden Triangle, are within a 60 km. radius. Among other important locations is Taptapani, the hot water spring located in the southern parts of Orissa amid tranquil surroundings. Bhitharkanika is the second largest mangrove in Asia and also a wildlife sanctuary. It is known for Olive Ridley turtles and a crocodile reserve within a few hours drive from Bhubaneswar. For nature lovers, Simlipal National Park is a major attraction.

OTDC with 21 properties across the State at all major tourist destinations conducted a meeting on promoting tourism to the State from Vizag here on Thursday with OTDC general manager Manorajan Patnaik participating. P.K. Chand, secretary of OTDC, Alok Mishra, manager (Marketing) and Anand Mahapatra, manager of Panthnivas at Barkul were present.

Two packages

OTDC is offering two special packages for those visiting the State from Vizag. The first one, Golden Triangle, covers Bhubaneswar, Puri, Konark and Chilka for two nights and three days at Rs.2,700 per person with transport and Rs.2,100 without transport.

The other package named `Dream Destinations-Chilka,' covers Chilka, Puri and Konark by boat and by road and costs Rs.3,060 a person with transport and Rs.2,640 without transport.

While online reservations can be done on the website www.panthanivas.com, Pelican Holidays at Dwarakanagar in Vizag is OTDC's authorised booking agent to provide instant reservation and conduct package tours, says Mr. Alok Mishra.

New additions add colour to zoo

VIZAG: The silence of the afternoon is punctuated by the bell-like, fluid calls of the avian bandits. The warm afternoon sun glistens on their golden yellow wings. The recently added avian wonders are the new source of attraction at the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.

One pair of emerald parakeet, one pair of lutino parakeet, one pair of white peafowl, one female khaliz pheasant and one female ring-necked pheasant have been added in the zoo. For the curious visitors, the restless antics of the new zoo members provide a good deal of entertainment as they fly around the enclosures with great flurry and clamour.

The pheasants and peafowl were brought here from the Hyderabad zoo to facilitate breeding. "However, it is very difficult to breed bigger birds like parakeets and pheasants in captivity. The reasons for this may be lack of natural stimulation and *** ratio," says zoo curator Vijaykumar.

The females will be released from the small enclosures where they are kept at present once they get familiar with the males. A hardy, wily, game bird, the pheasant possesses keen survival instincts and an uncanny ability to escape. The two pairs of parakeets that have been donated to the zoo belong to the exotic variety of bird species.

At present, the zoo has around 20 exotic bird species. A pair of these African species of parakeet costs not less than Rs.30,000, he says. There is a proposal to bring three male and three female gharials from Patna zoo in exchange of sloth bears. Gharials are fresh water crocodiles found mostly in the Ganges. At present, the zoo has only three female gharials.
