There were some religions in ancient India that opposed belief on god. Charvaka and lokayat were popular atheist religions in those days. Charvaka means person who advocates that co-influence of 4 factors(earth, water, fire and air) is only reason for evolution and existance of life. There are no superhuman powers that contol world or life. Now also there are some people who follow charvaka religion. There is a Charvaka ashram in Mangalagiri in Guntur district. There are idols of some ancient Charvakas in that ashram. Idols of modern rationalists like Sri Sri(Srirangam Srinivasa Rao) were also installed in that ashram.

Atheism even existed 2,500 years back. Charvakas worked well against superstitions and fundamentalism. In olden days, there were 67 religions in India. Vedic religion was popular. Vedic religion was founded above 3,500 years ago. Charvakas, lokayats, buddhists and jains used to oppose vedic religion. They worked well against vedic religion. Now vedic religionists are very less in number. We can count only in thousands in our state about vedic religionists.

Some people are trying to revive charvakaism. Famous rationalist Thotakura Venkateswarlu is one of those people.
